Roofs made from shingles have a recognizable pattern. Shingles are installed on lath or solid sheeting. Usually, shingles are installed from the bottom, upward. To prevent leaks, shingles are installed on asphalt felt paper. This is resistant to wind swept rain, snow, and ice dams.

Shingles are Damaged Over Time: With age, shingles rot away. Asphalt shingle fibers shrink. The nail heads are exposed under the shingle. Eventually, water will seep into the building through the nail shank. This leads to rotting of the structure underneath the roof. Inside the building, ceilings will become damp and water will drip into the rooms.

How to Fix a Shingle Roof: If the shingles are torn, follow these steps to fix it.

  • Apply a thick layer of asphalt roofing sealant onto the roof, directly beneath the shingle.
  • Apply a small layer of sealant along the seal broken by the pry bar.
